Toning Cyanotypes Workshop

UPDATE: This is now now sold out. I’ve had a few enquiries from people who couldn’t do this date – so if you’d like to do a toning workshop please drop a message via the contact form and say if you’d prefer day or evenings etc.

Do you want to learn how to transform your blue cyanotypes into various other shades? It opens up so many creative possibilities. This is another workshop via Zoom that you can participate in from the safety of your own home. The price includes a kit.

In this workshop we will use various tannin toners. Some toners require a long soak, we will use the faster acting toners in the workshop, and you can experiment with other effects after the workshop.

Toning is not an exact science. We will learn from seeing everyone’s results, every print reacts differently, but you can learn to harness the beast by going through the right steps with the right chemicals! Toning is the most fun I have had since lockdown.

Your kit will contain:

  • bleaching agent
  • gloves
  • ingredients for 3 different toning baths
  • 2 x A5 cyanotype test prints (you can use these for the workshop if you don’t have any prints of your own to tone)
  • Recycled packaging
  • Postage (or hand delivery to SE addresses)

You will need :

  • some cyanotype prints you have made in the past (max size of each – A4) . These can be test strips, or prints from negatives, or photograms of leaves – anything you want to experiment with .
  • 2 , or ideally 3 trays that fit your prints (plastic trays, or plastic lids, or cat litter trays, would suffice… we’ll need about 1litre of liquid in each tray. (See photo for examples).
  • a jug or teapot
  • tap water, boiling water
  • cardboard or a solid surface to dry your prints. Prints are usually too soft to hang to dry

This will be a fun and relaxed workshop with a tea break midway through. If you have any questions please get in touch . Places are going really fast for my Zoom workshops so please fill in the form below and pay via the link soon to avoid disappointment. Places are limited.
